December 18
The mission of December 18 is to promote the protection of the rights of migrants worldwide. Our goal is to ensure that the human rights of all migrants are known, recognized and protected effectively, and that an environment is created for migrants to be full participants in any society. We promote an approach to migration policies that is based on existing international and regional human rights instruments and mechanisms.
The main guiding principle of December 18 is that migrants’ rights are human rights.
The two main programmes of December 18 focus on:
1) Mainstreaming migrants rights throughout the UN system, with an emphasis on the work on the UN Migrant Workers Convention.
2) Promoting International Migrants' Day (IMD) as an opportunity to celebrate the contributions made by migrant as well as to highlight their plight.
A number of private foundations, government agencies and international organisations have supported our work over recent years: Inter Pares, Oxfam-Novib, UNESCO, the Flemish Government, Nationale Loterij (Belgium), Federaal Impulsfonds (Belgium), the Network of European Foundations for Innovative Cooperation (NEF), Atlantic Philanthropies, the King Baudouin Foundation, the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, EC Youth in Action Programme and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and Bread for the World.
