Singapore today hosts close to one million migrant workers. WE believe there needs to be a sustained effort made in promoting awareness and in improving welfare. Direct services can offer help in tackling problems as they arise\, but many of these could be avoided through changes in policies and practices. To bring those about\, awareness-raising initiatives on migrant workers need to continue. This requires on-going research that produces assessments of migrant workers’ role and conditions\, looks at the needs and expectations of all the parties concerned\, and clarifies what the problem areas are. In addition\, awareness-raising efforts such as public education\, campaigns\, engagement with the media and dialogues with stakeholders are encouraging changes in public attitudes\, in the practices of agencies and official bodies in Singapore and in countries that send workers here\, as well as in law and regulations.
