Caritas Internationalis urges nations to support Domestic Workers Convention

The Church’s charitable arm, Caritas Internationalis, is working together with international labour unions and associations of employers to promote adhesion to ILO Convention 189. Caritas migrants advocacy officer Maria Suelzu says she would like to see at least 20 countries sign up to the convention for it to become a powerful tool in defence of the rights and dignity of domestic workers.

Meet Baldemar Velasquez

Legend has it that Baldemar Velasquez led his first fight for migrant farmworkers’ rights at the age of 12. He started working in the fields at 4 years old and soon became a self-taught scholar of social justice. Today, Velasquez is the founder and President of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), a labor union that has battled against unfair wages and mistreatment of migrant workers since 1967.

El Convenio de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT) sobre los trabajadores domésticos, que extiende los derechos laborales fundamentales a decenas de millones de personas en el mundo, entrará en vigor dentro de un año luego de haber obtenido las dos ratificaciones necesarias para tal efecto.

Filipinas fue el segundo país en ratificar el Convenio 189 de la OIT, la primera norma mundial dirigida a los trabajadores domésticos.

Millions of people moved to work in wealthy countries in the past twenty years before the economic crisis of 2008, according to a migration expert.

Demetrios Papademetriou, President of the Migration Policy Institute says that many migrant workers are likely to move to developed countries when there is economic growth.

However, he adds, migration is affected when significant numbers of people are out jobs and some politicians start to advocate anti-immigration policies.
