But the program doesn’t just aim to help survivors of human trafficking: it’s also run by survivors of human trafficking, aiming to “to give survivors the opportunity to help themselves by helping others”.

And an independent UN expert on trafficking has arrived in Australia to look at the situation for victims and to discuss this country's anti-trafficking measures.

En Ecuador, la trata de personas ha experimentado un aumento de un 1.000% en sólo cuatro años.

Las denuncias hechas por este tipo de crimen pasaron de 99 en 2005 a casi 900 en 2009. Esta cifra debería ser mayor si se considera que muchas de las víctimas prefieren no involucrar a las autoridades por temor a las represalias por parte de los criminales.

Según la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones, la OIM, Ecuador es un país de origen, tránsito y destino de personas tratadas con fines de explotación sexual y trabajo forzado.

Investigation urged into fate of migrants abducted in Mexico

Authorities in Mexico are being urged to investigate the kidnapping of some 40 migrants who have been missing for nearly a month.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says the migrants mostly from El Salvador and Guatemala were abducted in highly questionable circumstances while travelling on a freight train in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.

It is said to be Africa's largest human trafficking syndicate. Its route stretches all the way from Southern Ethiopia to South Africa. It is an illegal trade involving immigration officers and human traffickers, churning up to 200 millions shillings from desperate Ethiopians, fleeing economic hardship. Some make it in through that long journey south, while others end up in Kenyan jails. In the first of a three-part series, 'Dreams and Nightmares,' NTV's Yassin Juma begins our coverage of this illicit trade from the border town of Moyale.
