Central American migrants face risks in Mexico on journey to US

Hundreds of thousands of Central American migrants pass through Mexico on their way to the US each year. Thousands never reach their destination and their families are left searching for answers to the whereabouts of their loved ones. But in a rare case, a missing Honduran migrant was recently found in Veracruz and reconnected to his family. The issue highlights the dangers faced by migrants as they seek better paying work in the North and the challenges faced by families and human rights advocates who try to find those who have gone missing. FSRN’s Andalusia Knoll reports.

Mexico’s President Elect is in Washington, D.C. today, meeting with US President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, and discussing the economy, immigration, and other pressing issues. The visit of Enrique Peña Nieto comes as Democrats and Republicans in Congress are pushing for immigration reforms. The House of Representatives plans to vote this week on a bill to give more visas to high-skilled foreign workers, while some Senators from border states are pushing a bill to give young undocumented people a path to legal status.

With jobs hard to find, fewer Mexicans are choosing to make the trip across the border into the United States, at the same time more are choosing to turn around and head home. Accordingly, for the first time in years, in 2010 the net migration from Mexico was about zero.

Authorities in Mexico are being urged to investigate the kidnapping of some 40 migrants who have been missing for nearly a month.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says the migrants mostly from El Salvador and Guatemala were abducted in highly questionable circumstances while travelling on a freight train in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
