Mexico’s President Elect is in Washington, D.C. today, meeting with US President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, and discussing the economy, immigration, and other pressing issues. The visit of Enrique Peña Nieto comes as Democrats and Republicans in Congress are pushing for immigration reforms. The House of Representatives plans to vote this week on a bill to give more visas to high-skilled foreign workers, while some Senators from border states are pushing a bill to give young undocumented people a path to legal status.

Maryland voters to decide on state Dream Act

In next week’s election, Maryland voters will be deciding the fate of a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants access to in-state tuition at state colleges. The bill known as the Maryland Dream Act was signed into law by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley in May of last year, but opponents forced it onto the ballot of this year’s election. So far a federal Dream Act has failed to become law, though it was introduced into congress this term. Maryland’s measure will be the first time that a Dream Act will be decided on by popular vote. FSRN’s Clayton Conn reports.

Meet Baldemar Velasquez

Legend has it that Baldemar Velasquez led his first fight for migrant farmworkers’ rights at the age of 12. He started working in the fields at 4 years old and soon became a self-taught scholar of social justice. Today, Velasquez is the founder and President of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), a labor union that has battled against unfair wages and mistreatment of migrant workers since 1967.
