With reports on Mexico and Morocco and a feature interview with Ska Keller, member of the European Parliament for the Greens, our reporters Nina Haase, Jenni Roth and Ruth Reichstein worked hard to make this first edition worth listening to.

    Selon les estimations du Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR), plus de 1500 personnes se sont noyées ou sont portées disparues depuis leur tentative de traversée de la Méditerranée vers l’Europe en 2011. L’année 2011 est donc la plus meurtrière dans cette région depuis que le HCR a commencé à enregistrer les statistiques en 2006.

    2011 has been the deadliest year for Africans crossing the Mediterranean to flee to Europe, according to the UN’s refugee agency. UNHCR estimates that more than 1,500 people drowned or went missing while attempting to cross the sea. The actual number of deaths at sea may be even higher, the agency adds.
