Many of these workers are migrant workers facing harsh working conditions and who are at a heightened risk of exploitation. In this new edition of Odysseia we are therefore paying special attention to the 12-by-12 Campaign, launched by the ITUC in December 2011 in partnership with a wide range of civil society organizations.

December 18 is a day of action on the rights of migrant workers, refugees and displaced people. Adriana Paz was one of organizers of an event in Vancouver to commemorate this day. She is an activist with Justicia for Migrant Workers BC. Paz recently returned from the Arizona-Mexico border where she was researching the conditions for migrant workers there.

In California, immigrant farm workers pick most of the state's fruits and vegetables whilst struggling to achieve better working conditions. The United Farm Workers Union estimates that about 90 percent of the roughly 30,000 farm workers in California are foreign born, mostly from Mexico and about 70 percent of those are undocumented immigrants.
