Mexico’s President Elect is in Washington, D.C. today, meeting with US President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, and discussing the economy, immigration, and other pressing issues. The visit of Enrique Peña Nieto comes as Democrats and Republicans in Congress are pushing for immigration reforms. The House of Representatives plans to vote this week on a bill to give more visas to high-skilled foreign workers, while some Senators from border states are pushing a bill to give young undocumented people a path to legal status.

Many of these workers are migrant workers facing harsh working conditions and who are at a heightened risk of exploitation. In this new edition of Odysseia we are therefore paying special attention to the 12-by-12 Campaign, launched by the ITUC in December 2011 in partnership with a wide range of civil society organizations.

Since Arizona passed SB 1070 in 2010, five other states signed similar legislation into law: Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and Indiana. Some of those laws are on hold pending court rulings, but lawmakers in say they've already seen successes, as well as unforeseen consequences.
